Molly de Aguiar of the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation in New Jersey and Paul Bass of the New Haven Independent in Connecticut were featured speakers for a LION Publishers webinar May 7 on "Foundation Funding and Underwriting for Local News Sites." It was the third in a series of free webinars LION is offering for members.
The session included a good overview of the process for applying for grant money to support local journalism, what foundations are looking for and "do's and dont's" when applying. Potential pitfalls of accepting money to support reporting around a specific issue were discussed, and guidelines for maintaining editorial independence.
The webinar also included a discussion of the opportuntity that for-profit local journalism sites, not just nonprofits, have in oobtaining foundation funding.
